When Mass Effect Meets Battlefield

Two of Electronic Arts’ biggest current franchises collide in this wallpaper, sent today to Christina Norman, former BioWare designer on the Mass Effect series who is currently working for Riot Games, makers of League of Legends.

Check Out Phoenix Wright’s Surreal, Multi-Tiered Fighting Style In Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

The biggest applause in the panels that Capcom held for their upcoming fighting games came for the introduction of the blue-suited hero of the Ace Attorney games. During the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 panel, special consultant and fighting game expert Seth Killian talked about how the development team tried to make the unlikely placement of the barrister into a brawling game.

They also wanted to make sure that Phoenix still felt like the hero who’s earned a loyal following. I think they nailed it. Watch this video and you’ll probably agree.

Playstation Should You Buy Ace Combat: Assault Horizon? Yes. By Mike Fahey on October 17, 2011 at 12:00 AM Namco Bandai’s Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is out there ready to be purchased, or rented and played. But should you invest the time and money? Since I’m the only one playing, here’s my split personality Gut Check. On the blog now, Porter acknowledges that “this will clearly severely delay the next update, which was very near completion.” However, no Project Zomboid player’s personal information was on either of the two computers stolen, he said. Michael Fahey, Die-Hard

What the hell have they done to my series? I depend on Ace Combat for high-velocity aerial combat. In the three hours I’ve played Assault Horizon I’ve participated in a lengthy battle acting solely as a helicopter gunner, piloted my own helicopter slowly around a town providing cover fire for ground troops, and played an extended version of the gunner bit from the end of Modern Warfare 2. I’ve spent more time in other aircraft than I have in jets. This is not what I wanted. I can’t even use my flight stick? Screw this

Michael Fahey, Somewhat More Reasonable

ce Combat Fan: As much as I love the earlier entries in the series, I must admit that flying around in circles until the missiles hit was getting a bit tedious. Project Aces’ new Close-Range Assault system gives me the chance to experience a more dynamic and dramatic sort of dogfighting. I’m riding my enemy’s tails, camera shaking as I struggle to keep them in my sights. I’m killing bad guys with my machine guns — something that almost never happened in earlier entries in the series. Sure it’s essentially on rails at that point, but the action is so intense that I don’t mind so much. Between the new combat system and the frequency of flying (or not flying) things that are not jets, Assault Horizon doesn’t feel like an Ace Combat game, but what it does feel like is a game I didn’t mind purchasing

Michael Fahey, Fan of Air Combat in General

When I play Battlefield games I spend the entire match running to the air strip to grab the plane. I bought Apache Air Assault knowing it wasn’t good, just for a chance to spend a little time in a whup-whup machine. This game has helicopters, gunships, jets, and a multiplayer mode in which they can all fly together. With 31 different aircraft to pilot or wield against the enemy, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is the best bang for my flying buck. Yes.

Should You Buy Ace Combat: Assault Horizon? Yes.

Assassin’s Creed Line Dancing At New York’s Comic-Con

New York Comic-Con’s Just Dance 3 stage was always filled with an interesting mix of cosplayers, but these are my favorite: A dozen assassins from Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed line dancing to Sugarhill Gang’s Jump On It with the help of Ubisoft’s other major hit… Just Dance.
It’s a tad long, but you should probably skip over to three minutes in to see the special guest appearance.

Lessons Learned With A New York Comic-Con Press Badge

Disclaimer: This was not, by any stretch of the imagination, my first ever convention. NYCC 2011 was, however, my first convention as a member of the press. As it turns out, there isn’t much difference between a badge that says “4-day” and a badge that says “press” — unless the person wearing said badge makes that difference.

Here’s What Battlefield 3 Looks Like On The Xbox 360

Throughout its public relations cycle, DICE’s Battlefield 3 was shown only on PC and, later, PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 version was kept under the stairs, beaten weekly and fed fish heads and stale water.

That led many to assume it was a hideous thing, but if these screenshots from the Korean version of the game are legit, it looks OK.

I mean, things might change when you see it in motion, and things are certainly looking jaggier (and grainier) than they will on PC, but given the age of the 360′s hardware and shroud of mystery surrounding the version over the past six months, I was expecting much worse.

How To Get Arkham City’s One-Year Calendar Man Achievement In One Hour

There’s an Xbox 360 Achievement (and PlayStation 3 Trophy) in Batman: Arkham City called “Storyteller”. The description: “Have 12 murderous dates with Calendar Man.” To earn it, you have to talk to the incarcerated villain on 12 holidays, from New Year’s to Christmas.

Your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 needs to be running the game on the 12 holidays — or at least it needs to think it is.

It could take you a year to unlock this, but the folks at Wiki Game Guides believe they’ve found a major shortcut. Take the system offline. Change the system clock 12 times. They show their method in the video here. One caveat: we don’t know if putting your system back online will somehow invalidate the Achievement. (If anyone tries, let us know!)

Check Wiki Game Guides for more on the Achievement, including the list of dates you’ll need to use for the Achievement, honestly or otherwise.

I love the idea of an Achievement that, in the spirit of Nintendo’s village-simulator Animal Crossing, is programmed to reward players who play the game at set times of the year. When I found Calendar Man in the lower level of Arkham City‘s courthouse, I noticed that he wanted me to visit him on Halloween. At first I thought that time would simply move forward in the game. The Animal Crossing approach is more delightful.

As helpful as the tip for this Achievement is, I’m not going to use this advice. I don’t want to cheat. If you do and the game catches you, let’s hope there’s no Batman version of Mr. Resetti, the Animal Crossing character who scolds you if he catches you resetting your game clock.

(Side note: Arkham City already plays like Assassin’s Creed. Now we learn that it’s got an Achievement in the spirit of Animal Crossing. What’s next? The discovery of some Ace Combat-style Bat-jet?)

The Epic Rock Paper Scissors Game With A Batman Twist

From developer Massive Joe and The Batman cartoon producer/creative director Jeff Matsuda comes the most epic round of paper rock scissors ever committed to iOS — Age of Monsters.

Available today in the iTunes App Store, Age of Monsters — Rock Paper Scissors combines the simple game/decision-making process with the gorgeous artwork of Mr Matsuda. He’s created eight unique monsters to represent you and your friends in these three throw battles, with the winner walking away with the ability to call themselves the winner.

Massive Joe has included a training mode (in case the concept is beyond your comprehension), along with the ability to smack talk your friends and enemies when they lose (“Your hands suck!”).

It’s a little silly, sure, but it’s pretty, and it’s free, so who are we to complain? Oh yeah, we’re the internet; complain away!

How That Mario Bathroom Got That Way

Want to know how reader Liatte — a lawyer and aspiring Lego made her room of necessity themed around Nintendo’s iconic plumber? She’s been kind enough to answer a few questions about her Mario tribute bathroom and how she got it that way.

The bathroom’s looked like this for about eight months. I did it entirely myself, a professional only within the confines of my imagination. The blue paint was Dunn-Edwards “Azure Sky”, the Mario decals came from ThinkGeek.com, the Nintendo Controller soap flew in from Etsy.com, the towels I found on the internets, and the trashbox was made with some brown and black paint, some wood, and a Dremmel. I have been trying to figure out how to paint the toilet warp-pipe green and make this the flush sound, but alas… I am but a feeble woman.

I love all Mario games equally, like my (unborn) children. If I have to narrow it down, I’d say my top 4 are Mario Kart (N64), Super Mario Brothers (NES), Dr Mario (all platforms), and last but certainly not least, Mario Teaches Typing (without which this conversation would not be possible).

I don’t have roommates or a significant other, so I have the luxury of doing what I want, when I want. Though I’d imagine if someone were to share my space romantically or otherwise, they’d have similar impeccable tastes. The bathroom’s been well received, so I’m fortunate enough to be hanging out with the right people.

New Battlefield 3 Trailer Shows Off Multiplayer

Finally, the chance to watch DICE’s shiny Frostbite 2 engine get put through its paces in nearly two minutes of multiplayer mayhem. The clip showcases action from all the multiplayer maps shipping on the disc.

The game’s massive destructibility looks like it’s going to radically change the experience of online warfare. One minute you’re in a building taking cover, the next, the building’s on you taking your life.

The trailer also lets viewers peek at part of the Back to Karkand expansnsion pack, which polishes up classic maps from Battlefield 2 for use in that game’s sequel.

Uncharted 2 is NOT the best game this generation.

Oh, Uncharted 2. A game that got an amazing amount of awards from everywhere- and in my opinion, well deserved.

A title that was practically perfect on what it did, although it had one, ONE fatal flaw for me:

I could not replay it.

Uncharted 2 was a cinematic and set pieces-heavy game. It had things blowing up, it conveniently stopped you before this big piece of wood fell and crushed you horribly, it had alot of dialog (good dialog, mind you), and a plot akin to the ones of Indiana Jones, with some likeable characters.

It also had a mix of puzzles and platforming, as well as gunfights.

But...after playing it once, I could not bring myself to play it again.

Let me elaborate; everything was done perfectly. Thing is, the gameplay itself wasn't all that fun. It was pretty basic most of the time, in fact.

This is what killed a replay for me. Lack of fun. Too basic. Felt like a chore, we could say.

I couldn't replay the campaign- and being a Single Player-only (Well, most of the time) guy, Uncharted 2 just fell on the dark depths of my collection, being covered by dust as time passed.

I did not felt the same the first time through it- in fact, I could not stop playing it. There was just something that hooked me up to the game. As I've stated on this post before, it wasn't the case the second time through it.

Personally, lack of a great gameplay is a fatal flaw in a game. It is perfect for what it does- but it just feels too...basic. There's nothing AWESOME and INCREDIBLE about it, and a game that just feels boring...my theory is, the game was just awesome the first time around, but after that it fell short for said basic gameplay I've mentioned. The set pieces were awesome, the whole thing made you go "whoah!"- but, after you've seen everything the game had to offer, it did not felt fun nor incredible.

How is such a basic, boring game the best GAME this generation?

The ultimate guide to chosing the right console

With 3 consoles on the market, and also PC gaming, not everyone can own everything, thanks to various reasons ranging from money, to time issues. Thankfully each of the Gaming systems on the market today are all vastly different.

Through this guide I hope to help you find the right one.
Finding the exact match for everyone is a challenge, and in no way do I guarantee that the console you end up being matched too will be the right one. To do this I will split each segment into multiple categories as follows:

-Age
-Economic Situation
-Previous and Current Hardware
-Interests
-Social Life
-The Future
Go through all of the sections, marking down which console fits you best for each section, the console that you get the most if the one that’s the best for you!

Section 1: Age
“Age group is a great way to determine your console, as the consoles are typically built around age groups.”

Age 5-9: Nintendo Wii: This is an obvious choice the pre-double digit child as both consoles feature a wide range of games specifically designed with this age in mind. The Nintendo systems also consist of mostly rated E games, which are perfect for this age group.

Age 10-18: Microsoft Xbox 360: Teenagers love FPS games, there fun, fast paced, and don’t have a huge learning curve, or deep stories, which is perfect for the teenage mind. All teenagers want to do is run, and blow shit up. The Xbox 360 was designed around FPS gaming, everything from the controller to the games it offers. (Those in the 10-12 age group will also have an extra special experience because most of the Xbox gamers are around the same age.)

Age 19-50: Sony PS3, PC: The Playstation 3 offers the best variety of games which is what people in the adult years want. A lot of Sony’s games feature rich and deep stories, and innovative game play that adults crave. PC Gaming also proves to have a huge variety of games, and adults are willing to keep their system upgraded to play the latest games.

Age 51-death: Wii: I know, how typical? Give the old people the casual console right? Well the stereotypes are true, The Elderly want simple, easy games, and the Wii delivers. Wii fit also allows them to stay active, without going to the gym. The controls are simple, and easy to follow, which is what old people want. Now if your dead, I am not sure what console you should choose.

Section 2: Economic Situation
“Gaming on a budget is not a bad thing, and is very possible in this generation.”

Low Budget ($200 or less): Wii: The wii offers the cheapest out of the box experience for those on super tight budgets. All you need is $200, a TV, and your good to go. The console comes with a game to start you off, and offers all the basics to get gaming started.

Moderate Budget ($250-400): Xbox 360: The Xbox arcade is cheap, being $199, however does not offer a pure out of the box experience, so you’re going to need to invest in some upgrades and games. You’re probably going to want to pick up a bigger hard drive, and your Xbox live subscription also, but overall it’s not that expensive.

Average Budget: ($400-$600): Sony PS3: While the console does start at $299, your also going to want to pick up a game and an extra controller, and maybe a headset. This will bring you well over the standard $299 price tag, making it the most expensive of the 3 consoles, but also offers the “You get what you pay for” experience.

High Budget: ($600+): PC: PC Gaming is expensive, but also is rewarding. Those willing to spend the extra few hundred are going to get the best gaming experience, at higher resolution, and with almost endless customization. You truly get the best experience if you pay the most.

Section 3: Previous and Current Hardware
“People don’t go from Sports Cars to Minivans, it just don’t work”

Previous Console (Xbox, PS2, Game cube, or Old Gaming PC): If you like that that console provided and are planning an upgrade, stick with the same company. The new consoles have mostly the same games and variety the old ones have. So if you have a PS2, stick with Sony and go PS3, same with Xbox and Game cube. As for the PC, if your case is capable of handling upgrades, just upgrade it and stick with PC gaming.

HD TV: PS3, Xbox 360: You bought a HD TV for a reason, to view HD content. The PS3 is the console of choice for HD TV Gaming, with all of the exclusives running at at least 720p, with some at 1080p. Those looking at the Xbox should note that it does not have a majority of native HD games, with many of them being up scaled.

3D TV/Monitor: PC: While the PS3 has just recently introduced 3D, PC has had it for a while, with many major PC games supporting it. PC games also provide the best 3D experience if your hardware is capable of it.

SD TV: Wii: The main issue with SD gaming with an HD console is reading the text. Thanks to the fact the Wii was designed for SD TV’s, text is completely legible, and the games look great

Section 4: Interests
“What you like to do always determines what you buy”

Action: Xbox 360: The Xbox 360 offers the most games featuring out of this world action sequences, and B movie games. Don’t expect a whole lot of realism here.

Graphics: PC, PS3: Some people have a huge interest in graphics, and these people want the best looking games possible. For graphic whores you want the PC or the PS3. The PC provides the highest resolution of any gaming device, and the PS3 is not that far behind.

Simulators: PC: For realism, nothing matches what the PC can offer. The PC has the most realistic shooters, racing games, and flight simulators of them all.

Casual Games: Wii: No doubting it, the Wii has the most casual games of them all.

Fighting Games: PS3: I would recommend the Xbox, as it basically has all the same fighting games as the PS3, but the PS3 has the superior D-Pad, which is needed in these settings.

Online: Xbox 360: Xbox live has the best gaming community of them all, with the best social features toping even the PC.

Section 5: Social Life
“Everyone is different, some are 30 year old virgins in their basements, others are party animals that have fun every day”

Party’s: Wii: For the type of people that have lots of girls over all the time will want to get the Wii, it offers the most party games designed for multiple people to play at once, and also involve a lot of movement, and jumping, if you know what I mean.

Casual Relationships: PS3: For those looking to have a casual, 1 on 1 relationship with someone, the PS3 is the way to go. It offers lots of Co-Op games like LittleBigPlanet that have lots of laughs to keep you together.

Bro Parties: Xbox 360: The Xbox has a lot of games that offer 4 player split screen, and let you kill each other, the perfect combination for a dude party.

Alone: PS3: Looking for the best single player games? The PS3 is your answer, with games like Infamous and Uncharted 2, it has the most major single player hits.
Alone, with online friends: Xbox 360: Xbox live offers the best social experience with friends that have the console also. It is also the best service to find friends on.

Section 6: The Future
“It may be good now, but in 1 week it will be outdated again”

Upgradability: PC: The great thing about the PC is the ability to upgrade to the latest hardware without buying the whole system. However, this is set back by the constant need to.

Lasting Appeal: PS3: of the game machines out on the market, the PS3 is the only one that still sees no need for an upgrade, meaning we probably won’t be seeing a new PS3 for a good while. Also much like Sony’s previous platforms, it will get good treatment even with the PS3 launches.

Motion Gaming: Wii: The Wii has motion gaming locked down, and its guaranteed to be full of motion games in the near future. While the PS3 and Xbox have motion setups planed, it’s uncertain how long they will last.

Controller free games: Xbox 360: Those looking for games that don’t need a controller, or fans of the old Eye toy have a new, modern way to do it. Xbox Kinect offers games that don’t need a controller, however the tech is still not proven.

3DS and PSP2 spec. guess

Well the 3DS specs. are rumored to have been released, and until an official word from Nintendo we'll have to take it with a grain of salt, but I'm pretty sure the specs are spot on. In case you haven't seen them here's the link.

http://www.bestnintendo3dsg...

Now I personally had already formed my opinion on what I felt each handheld was going to be pushing spec wise, and here's what I came up with.

3DS thoughts

CPU: 400 - 800 MHz processor for top screen (480 Mhz) Gamecube
100 - 200 MHz processor for bottom screen (120 Mhz) Nintendo 64

Since Nintendo is known for recycling tech I wouldn’t be surprised if the bottom screen is the former top screen for the original DS and only uses a 64 MHz processor. But I think Nintendo's going to try harder this go round, but they're still going to be left behind.

RAM: 128 - 512MB (256MB) More than any Nintendo system

First off I never split up V RAM, and D Ram which is why there's only one figure. The Wii is their most powerful system and it only has 88MB. The 3DS games look on par with the Wii some a little better (whether it’s the tech or small screen?) and with a lower end processor, the web browser, 3D, and other features it needs the RAM update. I'm being generous here, but I think they'll go with 128MB.

GPU: 256 MHz GPU for top screen
64 MHz GPU for bottom screen

Again Nintendo is known for not pushing tech, and if we look at everything the 3DS is doing, it’s not really pushing anything, only catching up. Its games look better than their PSP counterparts, but it doesn’t blow the PSP out of the water. No doubt about it the 3DS is going to improve over time as all consoles do, but I don’t see it reaching XBox 360 level graphics. 480p, 30fps (Max 3D) or 480p, 60fps (2D)

So as you can see I gave the 3DS too much love, and if the rumored specs. are right, then the 3DS is practically on par with the PSP. That's what makes me doubt these rumored specs., but we'll have to wait and see.

Chinese Couple Sells All Three Kids to Play Online Games

A young Chinese couple has sold all three of their children in exchange for money to play online Nick jr games at Internet cafes, reports a southern Chinese newspaper.

According to Sanxiang City News, the couple met in an Internet cafe back in 2007 and bonded over their obsession with online video games.  A year later, the parents — who are both under 21 — welcomed their first child, a son.  Days after his birth, they left him home alone while they went to play online agame at an Internet cafe 30 km away.

In 2009, Li Lin and Li Juan welcomed their second child, a baby girl, and came up with the idea to sell her for money to fund their online game obsession.  They did so, receiving RMB 3,000 (less than $500), which they spent entirely shortly after.  The couple then proceeded to sell their first child and got 10 times as much for him — RMB 30,000, or about $4600.

Upon having their third child — another boy — the parents followed in their previous footsteps and also got RMB 30,000 for him.

They were finally turned into authorities when Li Lin’s mother found out what her son and his girlfriend had done.

When asked if they missed their children, the parents answered, “We don’t want to raise them, we just want to sell them for some money.”

Sanxiang City Newsreports the couple didn’t know they were breaking the law.

Official Pokemon Game Coming To Smartphones

The Pokemon Company is set to bring an official Pokemon Online game to smartphone devices, marking the first time that an official Nintendo-copyrighted app will be available on the iOS and Android.

Called Pokemon Iie Tap (rougly Pokemon: Say Tap?), the app appears to be a rhythm game where players “tap on Pokemon indigo trading cards to the beat of a song from the anime,” according to a translation by consumer video game site GamesRadar.

According to the game’s official announcement, it will be available for most iOS devices, as well as Android devices running version 2.1 of the platform.

Though this is the first iOS or Android application to carry an official Nintendo copyright, it is not the first mobile app of any kind: a Pokemon mobile phone game called Pokemate was released in Japan in 2006.

Though it is a rarity, Nintendo does have a history of releasing official games on platforms that are not its own, including a promotional Flash game to promote its Tingle character.

A release outside of Japan has not been announced.

Borderlands 2 Preview

One thing is clear, Gearbox Software is really enthusiastic about their fans. Really, really enthusiastic. Oozing gratitude and humility for the success of Borderlands, the team presenting at PAX was eager to show their love and affection for fans - from free copies of the new game to live demonstrations geared towards showing players of the original all the changes made in response to fan feedback, as well as all the good stuff that’s staying the same.

Like guns, lots and lots of guns. Outdoing the sheer quantity of firepower from the first game comes down to dual wield (in any combination) and unique manufacturers. Emphasis was on the Tediore brand, which are highly disposable. It’s encouraged to toss them away (preferably at an enemy, since they’ll explode) after ammo is depleted. Of course, the explosion is bigger if there’s some ammo in the gun, and the more ammo, the bigger the bang! A replacement Tediore gun? Oh that’s just instantly delivered in its place. Vladof guns warm-up slow then fire in a steady stream, AK-style, and Bandit guns have huge - really huge - ammo clips and seem to be pieced together from pub detritus.

This early it’s difficult to judge the success of their efforts in areas like storytelling, but that Gearbox so clearly recognizes the shortcomings in the first game inspires confidence. For Borderlands 2, writer Anthony Burch and creative director Paul Hellquist worked together so that the story and gameplay would complement one another, instead of having the former relegated to lengthy cut scenes wedged between gameplay (and miserable fetch quests). Still, they want story to be something that players can scale to their experience, so whether the player is following closely along or largely ignoring it in favor mission focus, story will be there in a more palatable way.

Characters (you know the crew - Mordecai, Lilith, Brick and Roland) from the first game will be appearing as NPCs with tie-ins to the sequel storyline, and Salvador the Gunzerker and Maya the Siren were shown off in the demo. Beardy Salvador is a fan of dual wield and can easily be a more brawn than brains type of dwarf, but the presenters are quick to point out that he still has a deep skill tree including Overheat, which grants a faster fire rate the longer you hold the trigger. Showing off his skills in the tundra (where Handsome Jack left him, maybe there’s some revenge on the horizon?) the Gunzerker rescues a buddy and sets about disposing of a giant robot.

AI movements are improved, and enemies can (and will) go anywhere in the environment that you can, as well as make use of environment features. The enemy AI improvements amount to squad-based behaviors with commanding units, those that wait for reinforcements after taking too much damage, and units that can repair/heal others. While the AI is a bit savvier it can also be stunned and injured in addition to just plain blown to pieces. Bullymongs, monsters of many arms that like to chuck ice at you, were encountered. There’s still Psychos, and a Nomad Torturer enemy made memorable use of a Psycho midget bandit as a meat shield. By freeing the midget you create a bit of a distraction: the midget picks a fight with the Nomad Torturer (granted, with no great success).

Environments are larger, and make use of a newly discovered color: green. The characteristic wastelands of Borderlands could, after all, get a little monotonous. Now with an arctic icescape and use of that aforementioned “green” color, the team took inspiration from areas like Iceland and the Scottish Highlands in their level design. Perched atop a level’s vantage point, the team was eager to point out that the green you can view in the distance (and everything in between) is someplace that you can walk to - or maybe drive to, as there is a new driving system (including a four-person party wagon) with new wheel physics. Getting where you’re may not be such a struggle, either, with the new mini-map in the upper right and new user interface. The menu screen has been redesigned with the player and split-screen MP in mind, and the quest system revamped so it’s easier to co-op.

Borderlands was a refreshing addition to the shooter genre - the weapon generation, unique art style, RPG elements and solid shooter mechanics are a winning combination. Borderlands 2 is an iterative take, with expanded environments, improved storytelling, and redesigned interface. It follows that if you like Borderlands, you’ll like Borderlands 2 - and if you were on the fence about the series this may well be enough to sell you.

HaloFest Review

My trip to PAX Prime 2011 was instantly made more complete with the announcement that they were also going to celebrate 10 years of Halo at PAX. I remember the days of playing countless hours of Halo in college and still can't believe it has been 10 years since the launch of Combat Evolved. Getting the opportunity to experience all that is Halo at HaloFest was a dream come true and a great bit of nostalgia.

As I ascend the 2 escalators up to HaloFest, I am greeted by a life-size Warthog replica and the familiar music from Halo: CE. The music sends chills down my body, and I could feel the energy from all of the other Halo enthusiasts in the exhibit. They had tons of LAN setups for everyone to try out the new multiplayer and firefight maps. Within 2 seconds of starting up a free-for-all match on the remake of Prisoner from CE, which is my favorite multiplayer map, I felt at home and quickly recalled the positioning of the catwalks and where the rocket spawn point is. I also played a round of Firefight on a remake of the “Halo” level from the CE campaign. I had never seen or played this re-made map before, but immediately I knew the layout of the map and where the enemies are dropped off because it is exactly like the original. From the brief glimpse of the multiplayer that I experienced, I can only imagine what sort of memories everyone will have the first time they jump into the game.

I attended a panel about celebrating 10 years of Halo with the actors who did the voices of Master Chief, Cortana, 343 Guilty Spark, and Captain Keyes. The panel starts off slowly with Marty O'Donnell talking about each actor and how they worked on old projects like Myth and Oni. He finally discusses Halo, and eventually the huge news came out that Steve Downes (Master Chief) and Jen Taylor (Cortana) had never actually met and been together in the same room before this weekend at HaloFest. The rest of the panel focused on each actor’s feelings about the job, and how surprised they were at how things turned out. Another tidbit that was revealed was that Pete Stacker (Captain Keyes) is also the voice in the Bud Light "Real Men of Genius" commercials, and prepared a special "Real Men of Halo" song about terrible Warthog drivers to perform for everyone (It can be viewed at the 47 minute mark: http://www.ign.com/videos/2... ). It was a funny treat for the audience and shows how the actors are extremely huge fans of the series. After the panel, Marty O'Donnell and the voice actors for Master Chief, Cortana, Captain Keyes, and 343 Guilty Spark signed my copy of Halo: Combat Evolved. This was a one of a kind moment and now I have a rare collector's item to always remember this.

Another panel was about the re-imaging of the campaign for Halo: Anniversary where they discussed how they were working hard to maintain the campaign that everyone knows from their childhood, with glitches, easter eggs, and all. ‘343 Guilty Spark’ is demoed for those in attendance and they began the level in "classic" mode, which looks exactly like the Halo from 10 years ago. After a few minutes, at the push of the "back" button, the dreary gray fog and bland brown trees transform into a bright, florescent purple and green jungle exploding with life. It was amazing to see the huge difference between the exact same game in a split second. You can switch back and forth any time you want, even in the middle of a grenade toss or while reloading. Hitting the "back" button changes the priority of the different graphics engines, which makes for the ease of switching back and forth on the fly. Later, I viewed a short behind closed doors demo of the same level with the newly announced 3D feature that can be enabled anytime from the options menu. Although obviously not viewable in classic mode, it takes a few seconds for the full effect to kick in, and you can still switch back and forth to classic mode on the fly. I've never seen a game in 3D before, but the effect was pretty impressive. Reloading the Needler causes the spikes on the gun to jump off the screen and everyone watching the demo ducked during the first reload, and all of the leaves from the lush jungle create a great depth of field. The 3D graphics seem a little shimmery and I'm not sure if that is normal for 3D tech, nevertheless the game looks to be way more than a simple up-res'd HD remake.

Sunday morning brought the penultimate panel for a Halo fan as 343 Industries hosted a 1 hour on Halo 4. They were coy on obvious story details, but revealed that the next Halo trilogy will be called “The Reclaimer Trilogy,” and showed lots of concept art detailing Forerunner architecture. It also sounds like the Flood will no longer be an enemy since they seem to want to tell a new story in this trilogy. Sotaro Tojima, the audio director at 343, then showed an interesting video about how his team went to dangerous lengths to capture unique sounds. Halo has always been synonymous with great music and sound, and I hope Sotaro can live up to the big shoes Marty O’Donnell has left behind. Next up was a question and answer session, and everyone seemed to focus on story related questions, which obviously 343 were not going to answer, so it was a somewhat wasted Q&A. Someone did get a good nugget of information out of the team when they said that there will be destructible environments, but they didn’t want to make them fully destructible because that strays too far from the Halo gameplay that everyone knows. If I had a chance to ask a question, it would have been about whether they were building an engine from scratch, or modifying the Halo: Reach one. The panel ended with the team showing a new animated video of the different concept art that seems to focus on large, grandiose structures and environments to try and capture the epic feel of Halo. Overall, it sounds like 343 Industries is trying extremely hard to capture the feel and magic that Bungie had when making Halo, and between 200 employees and 3 years of work so far, I think they are well on their way to making a masterpiece.

Get (the real) Tetris on your Android phone for the cool price of 'free'

Alright proud Android users, time to replace that "Tetris" game on your phones with the real deal. EA has made the ubiquitous Russian puzzle game available on Android for free, zilch, nada, zero. Capiche? (That's your queue to hit up the Android Market.) The game includes new-and-improved visuals, a fan favorite marathon mode and it's the real deal ... for free.

Seriously, do we really need a better selling point? Fine, in addition to full touch controls, players can track their stats and high scores in the free version of Tetris for Android, too. Since the ultimate puzzle game debuted in the '80s, Tetris has been made available on 50 platforms, and is available in nearly every country in the world.

That's sure some progress for a game that hasn't changed much in almost 30 years--and doesn't need to, mind you. (Though, cross-play compatibility with Tetris Battle on Facebook would be most welcome.)

"Tetris is one of the most distinctive, well-known and popular video game franchises in the world and it gives EA the opportunity to grow its already-expanding customer base on the Android platform," said EA Interactive VP of Sales and Marketing Bernard Kim in a statement. "Tetris has a strong legacy in the mobile gaming world and we're excited to bring a free version of Tetris to yet another great platform."

Tetris Android Free
Tetris follows Scrabble as being the second game EA has made available on the Android platform. Perhaps we're witnessing a growing EA trend. Now, if only that trend would find its way over to my iPhone.

Zoo World 2 grazes into Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa

Well, zoos are an international pastime. RockYou, creator of hit zookeeping Facebook game Zoo World (and its sequel) has announced that it will provide Turkish, Middle Eastern and North African fans localized version of Zoo World 2. With the help of Peak Games, the leading social gaming company in the MENA region, these newly localized versions of the game will enjoy local marketing, user acquisition, customer support, and community management.

"We realize that the best global approach is made up of a series of local approaches," RockYou SVP and GM of Studio Partners Josh Grant said in a statement. "So we've chosen the strongest partner for these regions in Peak Games: experts who can ensure that our games cater to their culture and audience through proper localization."

The Middle Eastern developer based in Istanbul will translate the game into both Modern Arabic and Turkish, as well as incorporate culturally appropriate enhancements to the games. The move marks RockYou's goal to become one of the top social games publishers around, and expanding to one of the most active Facebook communities today is a brilliant start.

Gallery: Zoo World 2 on Facebook

Just as the company expands into new territory, it also looks to new sources of hit games. Recently, the company opened an indie games partnerships firm called Studio Partners to provide indie social games with publishing support. Perhaps we'll see more RockYou games come from this region than not, thanks to Studio Partners. Now that would be an interesting way to expand.

Do you think RockYou might be looking to beat other countries like Zynga and EA to the punch by localizing in these territories? Could RockYou soon compete directly with Facebook, using this strategy? Sound off in the comments. 1 Comment

The Top 10 Free iOS and Android Games -- September 2011

Alright, now the summer is really over. As we dry our eyes of those final sun-soaked tears, we at least have one thing to cheer us up: games. Ah yes, the ultimate digital pastime-meets-picker-upper just gets better and better now that we have access to a myriad of games right within our iPhones and Android phones.

And while the lot of them cost little more than $.99, the number of full-featured, free games on both platforms is only growing. Just for you, we've pruned the games that hit the top 10 on both platforms by the end of September.

You can expect to see everyone's favorite angst-ridden, wingless birds more than once among the newcomers. Rather than simply shut them out as we have before, how's about we take each opportunity to highlight some of the crazy news surrounding them? Away we go:

Top 10 Free iOS Games
1. Cross Fingers
Mobigame's goofy and visibly confusing puzzle game is free for a limited time only. The name of the game is tangrams, and it's up to you to use the oddly-shaped puzzle pieces provided to form the shapes featured in each level. The game also contains an Arcade Mode in which players must keep up with a "frenetic machine," solving puzzles rapidly to survive.
Oregon Trail iPhone
2. The Oregon Trail
Famed (or infamous) developer Gameloft and The Learning Company have made their mobile take on this classic PC adventure game free for a limited time. Frankly, the game looks and seems to play a lot like its Facebook counterpart created by Blue Fang, so check out our preview to get an idea of how it might work. Get this: It has Facebook Connect, too ... hmm.

3. Texas Poker
Another newcomer by Kamagames brings the live multiplayer poker experience to your iPhone. Players can invite friends to play with them via email, Facebook and Twitter. While it's free to play, players can, of course, buy chips with real dough from inside the game. Oh, and there's live chat, too. So, you can trash talk while you lay down that straight.

4. Card Ace: Casino
Boy, do people enjoy gamblin'. This game by Self Aware Games allows players to sit in on more than just poker like Blackjack (21), slots and the creator's very own "word-game-meets-Texas-Hold-'Em masterpiece." Of course, players can buy more chips within in the game with real cash, and each casino game has real-time chat and public rooms for live play.

5. Traffic Rush
Only free until Oct. 3, this game courtesy of Donut Games tasks players with keeping an intersection accident-free by touching and guiding vehicles away from one another. Oh, and the cross streets are two-way (and with two lanes), so we can already see this one getting crazy rather quickly. And the creators threw in a Rail Rush mode, too, which can only spell trouble.

6. Office Zombie
Just in time for Halloween, Fluik released this haunted take on its Office Jerk game. Ad-supported, the game lets players torment, well, a zombified office employee with anything they can dig up. We're not sure what the objective of this game is, really, but at least it might serve as a stress reliever? That's all I got.
High Caliber Hunting iPhone
7. High Caliber Hunting
EA's mobile take on the popular hunting sub genre of hunting games like Cabela's is free for a limited time. And it looks surprisingly graphic, displaying the vitals of the game's various, um, game as if you had x-ray vision. Simulation is the goal in this game, with real brand name rifles and equipment featured as well as a up close-and-personal "Bullet-Cam". Ew.

8. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12
Another of EA's popular franchises is free on iOS for a limited time. Of course, you can play across multiple real-life golf courses controlling a number of professional athletes. But the most interesting news here is the Closest to the Pin Challenge, an asynchronous social mini game in which Facebook friends post their best shots and talk trash.

9. Pretty Pet Pony
Ready to overload your iPhone with cute? Good, because this game by Dream Cortex and Animoca has the pink stuff in spades. It's your job to clean, pamper and raise your own ponies in Cuby the Bear's stables. Then, it's off to the race track to compete with your friends on tracks made of rainbows ... I think I just threw up a little bit.

10. Stupid Ninjas
Stupid Zombies maker GameResort takes the same concept from its first game to the Far East: try to kill all the ninjas on screen with as few sword swipes as possible. Cause chain reactions from the shurikens that each ninja holds. The game comes with 180 levels and Game Center support to boast your ninja-slicing prowess.

Top 10 Free Android Games
Hanging With Friends Android
1. Angry Birds
Did you know that soon, you might be able to play Angry Birds with thousands of people through the sound of your collective cacophony? Crazy, we know.

2. Hanging with Friends
Zynga's adorable take on the classic game of Hangman was recently released to Android devices, and it's apparently already heating things up. The game is essentially identical to the iOS version released earlier this summer, so check out our full preview to get a better idea of what it's like.

3. Angry Birds Rio
Hey, did you know that co-star of the NBC show Chuck, Yvonne Strahovski, is an Angry Birds master? Yeah, we know, her and everybody else at this point. But hey, maybe there's a chance she'll become the next Rovio spokeswoman--yowza!

4. Words with Friends
Yup, Zynga is killing it on Android, we know. But what's more interesting about Words with Friends is that you can not only now play it on Facebook, but pick up your existing games on either platform through Facebook Connect. Living in the 21st century has its perks.

5. Bunny Shooter Free Game
Yes, that is the game's real title. (But finally, a new game!) Created by the painfully literal dudes at Best, Cool & Fun Games, this puzzler (picture below) tasks players with shooting these poor pink bunnies with as few arrows as possible. You'll do this across over 180 levels filled with obstacles and explosions ... and probably feel a tinge of guilt about it afterward.

6. Angry Birds Seasons
Dude, seriously--oh, sorry. Did you know that Rovio might be looking to get into publishing other indie games? Maybe that way, the company can turn around the next hit game to dominate the charts. (At least it'll be something new?)

7. Drag Racing
Creative Mobile's Drag Racing has enjoyed the same spot for two months now, and it's probably thanks to the support it has from real-life car brands. Players can also race each other in real time through the Pro League, which again is likely a major selling point. Oh, and watch out for when this game hits Facebook--come on, cross-platform play.
Bunny Shooter Android
8. Lane Splitter
Fractiv hits the top 10 with this "motorcycle survival game" in which players must make it to their wedding with a new character that sports a special ability. Players tilt their device to steer the motorcycle as it (hopefully) weaves in and out of traffic. With Facebook Connect, players can compete for the high score between their friends and post achievements.

9. Fruit Ninja
Guys, it has finally happened: The real Fruit Ninja by Halfbrick Studios has made it into the top 10. By now, you should know the drill--this game is dang near everywhere. Also, it just launched on Facebook, if you want to slice up even bigger fruit.

10. Tetris
A game as iconic as Tetris probably deserves to be much higher on this list, but hey, at least it's a spot. While there's not much to be said of Tetris after some 27 years, that doesn't mean the game is not worthy of your time. Just give it go already, will ya?

Game of the Day: Ice Breakers Penguin Pirates

ice breakers penguin pirates game of the dayFolks, it's the last day of September's Game of the Day Sweepstakes, and what better way to celebrate this beautiful Friday than with one of my favorite games: Ice Breakers Penguin Pirates. It's your classic match 3 game with a goofy penguin pirate theme. Ice Breakers Penguin Pirates starts off like a standard match 3 game, but don't let the first few levels fool you. Games.com has added some new twists such as changing the color of tiles and clearing a path for special items like maps to drop off the board.

You'll have to sharpen your matching skills to beat the clock. Ice Breakers: Penguin Pirates will definitely challenge you! Get to it, Matey. Penguin Pirates await!

The Sims Social maker EA wants you ... to make it lots of ad money

And unfortunately, it doesn't sound like you'll have much of a choice. EA, co-creator of Playfish's The Sims Social on Facebook (and arch nemesis to Zynga at this point), has announced EA Legend.

This is the company's new platform to provide marketers and advertisers with "campaign and audience insights across mobile, social, online and console games reaching over 300 million people worldwide," a release reads.

In other words, you're more valuable to EA than you might already know. The publisher wants to use the information you provide them inadvertently through gameplay to rope in ad and marketing deals not just through its Facebook games but all of its games. More specifically, EA said it can provide advertisers with (prepare for buzzword overload):

    Key cross-platform campaign performance indicators such as impressions, clicks, unduplicated reach, demographic profiles, social media buzz, and ROI metrics.

    Segmented audience insights based on demographic, psychographic, and social data.

    Ability to drill down into the factors that impact campaign effectiveness including audience engagement, audience segmentation and type of creative all measured over time.

EA Legend
What's that again--psychographic data? This may all sound like something out of "1984," but it's nothing new. If you think other game creators don't do this type of stuff, then here's your wake-up call. We won't know exactly what information about us EA will provide to advertisers through Legend until it makes advertisers see green at this year's Advertising Week event in New York City on Oct. 4. And if EA keeps using words like psychographic, we may never know.

Zoo World creator RockYou's Jonathan Knight leaves for Zynga

And there goes another. Inside Social Games reports that Jonathan Knight (pictured), former SVP of Games at RockYou, has left the company for Zynga. The company's--best known for Zoo World--CEO Lisa Marino confirmed the move. Before his departure, Knight oversaw the acquisitions of studios like 3 Blokes, which just launched Galactic Allies, and Playdemic of Gourmet Ranch fame.

"We hired [Knight] to help us build out a portfolio of great products and he's done the job," Marino told ISG. "We have built a strong team of talent through a careful hiring process, our Studio Partners program, and acquisitions over the past year. The departure of Jonathan will not impact our game development pipeline or our plans to continue to launch quality titles."

Knight has a deep history in the games business, coming to RockYou from veteran publisher EA as VP and executive VP for nine years. During that time, Knight oversaw major releases like entries in The Sims series and The Simpsons Game. In fact, ISG recalls that Knight was brought in to help RockYou transform from a social app developer into a social game creator.

The move happens just as RockYou prepares to launch Cloudforest Expedition on Facebook with designer John Romero's Loot Drop. Knight joins a number of major video game execs that have flocked to Zynga in the past year, many of which coming from EA. The company's CCO Jeff Schappert recently left for Zynga, who was then followed by NBA Jam creator Mark Turmell and EA Play exec Jeff Karp. We've contacted Zynga for comment as to what Knight might be up to with the company.

What do you think of Knight's move from RockYou to Zynga? What are your thoughts on RockYou's stable of Facebook games thus far? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

CrowdStar CEO: We want to create a game that reaches a billion people

The question is, however, can it be done? Speaking at this week's HTML5 Dev Conference in San Francisco, YouWeb chairman and CrowdStar--It Girl, anyone?--CEO Peter Relan (obviously not pictured) said, "We want to create the game that reaches a billion people." VentureBeat reports that the general consensus of the event was that HTML5 is the future of social and mobile gaming.

HTML5 is a web-based coding language that, in theory, will allow game creators to develop a single game that could be played across multiple devices through web browsers without a change in the experience. Currently, however, HTML5 isn't looking so hot as a gaming platform--HTML5 games aren't as sophisticated yet as even FarmVille on iPhone--but it's gaining steam.

"We sense that web 3.0 is here," Relan said during a panel at the conference. "Mobile devices will get to six billion people. They will become pervasive. We greatly overestimate what we can do with a technology in two years, and greatly underestimate what we can do in 10 years." Relan is confident that, from arcade-style games, HTML5 games will evolve into more complex experiences, citing games on the iPhone as an example.

And Relan shares this sentiment with a number of folks in the space. Rovio marketing exec Peter Vesterbacka has already mentioned his company's goals of reaching 1 billion players with the Angry Birds franchise. Even EA CEO John Riccitiello sees his company topping 1 billion players worldwide. And the mighty Zynga, despite being less than bullish on this whole dang-fangled HTML5 thing, is rumored to be working with Facebook on its not-so-secret Project Spartan.

But wait a tick--we're talking 1 billion players of a single game, no? To do that, it's going to take not only the right technology, but a game with enough widespread appeal to hit critical mass. If anything, the number one challenge game creators will face in this effort isn't whether it is possible, but whether they can craft characters that folks of any background can fall in love with.

Do you think any of these companies could create a game that will reach 1 billion players or downloads? What do you think it will take to accomplish such a feat. Sound off in the comments. 1 Comment There may not be another Zynga game in which Energy is more important than in Adventure World. Every switch thrown, every puzzle solved and beastie whacked costs you the Facebook game juice. Players often find themselves without Energy minutes into an Expedition. But this isn't the time for whining--it's time to show you the value of upgrading your Tools and how to do it.

Tools: The Game Changer
If you noticed, each piece of debris and monster has a life bar, and normally take multiple hits with your Whip or Machete to whittle down. This, of course, quickly becomes a waste in later Expeditions purely due to the amount of obstacles in your path. But increasing the amount of damage your various Tools inflict against said baddies could considerably reduce the Energy spend in-game.

For instance, say a Snake has three hit points and is Level 5. Since monsters can hit back in this game, it could take three to five Energy before an enemy goes down. Now, imagine if you had upgraded your Whip to Level 2. Offing that Snake would take just two to four Energy with a beefier Whip. The same situation applies to Tools like the Machete.
Adventure World Tool Shop inside
And Now For Your How-To
Adventure World Tool Shop outsideUpgrading your Tools in Adventure World is simple. All you need to do is head back to Base Camp from an Expedition, and look for a makeshift hut that should already be in place in your headquarters. When you click on the Tool Shop, a window will appear featuring all the Tools you've found thus far on your journeys. Click on the Tool you wish to upgrade.

Once you click on a Tool to upgrade, you'll notice that each Tool costs Coins to upgrade. That's it--no asking friends to help you out with materials or farming certain crops for special items. Just the goods you find during your travels in search of El Dorado. However, Coins are actually quite rare in this game, so you'll need to save and spend wisely.

When you have enough Coins for an upgrade, just click on the appropriate icon to pay up. Tool upgrades are also level-locked, meaning you must reach a certain level for most Tools before being able to upgrade them using Coins. If you're feeling impatient, you could always unlock access to those higher level Tools early using Adventure Cash.

Just One Small Catch...
However, some Tool upgrades do require an extra boost: your Tool Shop. Yes, the building itself can be upgraded, too. And this time, you will need items from your friends. (Just think of how things work in CityVille.) Luckily, you only have to do this about twice to unlock access to all of the game's Tools. Then, it's back onto leveling up to access new upgrades for Coins.
Adventure World Tool Shop Upgrade
Upgraded Tools are hands-down the way to go, if you want to save precious Energy for the good stuff, that is. You know, exploring ... uncovering the secrets of El Dorado? That kind of stuff. Your wallet might thank us later.

FarmVille Lighthouse Cove Chapter 2 Bonus Goals: Everything you need to know

If you thought the original Bonus Challenge goals in FarmVille's Lighthouse Cove were difficult, you may not be excited to hear that there is now a second set of goals that have also been given the "Bonus" treatment. These three goals appear alongside the goals from Chapter 2 in the Lighthouse Cove story. We'll tell you flat out - one goal requires you to expand your Lighthouse Cove farm, which is currently only available to do with Farm Cash. Keep that in mind when you decide whether or not to actively finish these goals.

Bonus Quest 4

    * Harvest Lighthouse Cove
    * Harvest 55 Tarragon
    * Complete 1 Orchard

While these tasks aren't incredibly difficult, they might be a bit time consuming depending on how big your Lighthouse Cove already is. That is, if you haven't already expanded your Lighthouse Cove, you won't be allowed to plant 55 crops at a time, so you'll need to do two plantings to reach the 55 total. If you finish this first Bonus Quest (the fourth overall for the farm - hence the name), you'll receive 500 XP, an Unwither, a Livestock Baby Animal and 2,500 coins.

Bonus Quest 5

    * Harvest 70 Darrow Blackberries
    * Make Blackberry Ice Cream Twice
    * Expand your farm to an Inlet Garden

Blackberry Ice Cream is available to craft inside your Restaurant, and requires three Darrow Blackberry, two Chandler Blueberry and three Strawberry bushels. To finish this particular task, you'll not only have to set the recipe to craft twice, but will also have to wait the six hour period for them to finish. As for the Inlet Garden, here's the task that I warned you of earlier. As of this writing, an Inlet Garden farm is only available for 40 Farm Cash, and that's after you go through the Coastal Patch farm that costs 30 Farm Cash. That is, if you're looking to complete this particular goal, you'll need to shell out 70 Farm Cash with no option for coin-spending instead. If you decide to go through with this goal, and can finish it, you'll receive 1,000 XP, a Speckled Alder tree and 5,000 coins.

Bonus Quest 6

    * Complete a Zoo
    * Harvest 70 Red Clover
    * Harvest 70 Chandler Blueberries

For this goal, the requirements are toned down a bit, at least in terms of the cost to your wallet. By the time you make it this far, you'll have the ability to plant more than the starting 35 plots of land on your farm, so the crop tasks will be easier by default. As for the Zoo, this is built using 30 ingredients that can gather from your friends. It's not an incredibly difficult building to complete, so check out our guide to doing so for details. If you can finish this final bonus goal for Chapter 2, you'll receive 500 XP, a Chimpanzee and 2,500 coins.

We've been told that additional goals will be launching in the game every week, so keep checking back with us as we'll bring you everything you need to know about the future Chapter 3 goals in Lighthouse Cove and beyond.

Zynga Mobile Chief: Mobile is a 'new social gaming frontier'

Everyone else is right there with ya, big red. During an interview with The Guardian, Zynga Mobile SVP David Ko said, "We believe that mobile represents a new social gaming frontier. We've always said we want Zynga to be the best content creators in the world, and we are platform agnostic." More and more Zynga fans expect to play its games on their phones and tablets, which wasn't exactly where CEO Mark Pincus's heart was many moons ago.

Regardless of whether Zynga has been creating mobile games since Zynga Poker hit iOS devices in 2008, it was only the advent of Facebook Connect that motivated the company to dig deeper into the platform. From that we got games like FarmVille and CityVille Hometown, neither of which are feature-complete versions of their Facebook counterparts. (The latter of which is a different game entirely.)

Now, The Guardian reports that Zynga is looking to take advantage of mobile devices' key features like cameras and accelerometers in future games. And tablets appear to be a big deal in Zynga HQ--Ko told The Guardian the company was "very bullish" on the idea. And HTML5, the emergent web coding language that's been touted as the proverbial messiah for cross-platform social gaming, is something Ko admits the company is interested in.

"HTML5 is interesting, although I do feel it is early," Ko told The Guardian. "With those acquisitions, you can see into our thinking in this area a little bit." (Ko there is referring to companies like Newtoy and Dextrose.) Zynga already released one game through HTML5: Mafia Wars Atlantic City.

However, HTML5 games have yet to achieve the complexity of, say, Hanging With Friends, which Zynga just released on Android devices. Regardless, all eyes--including Zynga's--are on those 4-inch screens that rarely leave your side. And with companies as unlikely as Capcom making buku bucks on mobile games, you can bet Zynga is a' hustlin'.

Half of all U.S. social gamers own a game console, RockYou study says

As if we already didn't know: Some social gamers are more "hardcore" than we thought. But the next study released that attempts to drive this point home is courtesy of Zoo World creator RockYou and conducted by Interpret, a media research firm. Titled the "Social Gamer Thought Leadership Research Study," it finds that 50 percent of U.S. social gamers own a traditional gaming console.

The study, which polled over 2,00 social game fans living in the U.S. aged 18 and older with a 60-40 women to men split, also found that social gamers are more "sophisticated." To back up the claim, the study reports a quarter of social gamers prefer games with quests, and that 22 percent admit that score-sharing drives their urge to play more. Oh, and these players also spend quite a bit of time with the games.

Of the over 2,000 people polled, RockYou and Interpret found that the average social gamer spends an average of 9.5 hours playing out of the 13 average hours they spend on networks like Facebook. The average social game player, according to the study, has just over 16 real-life frieds playing these games with them and has made 20 new friends through social games. Of course, the study doesn't get into how deep said friendships are, but how could you?

The study also reports that 42 percent of social gamers would play a social game more, if offered real world rewards like coupons or gift cards. (But isn't the idea to get them to pay up?) It was just recently that Raptr discovered that a number of Zynga fans may be Halo and Grand Theft Auto fans, too. And before that, Kabam found in its own study that the hardcore crowd on Facebook is growing.

What should you take away from this influx of studies and reports? Regardless of whether you still dig tending to virtual crops or running a shanty town, many developers--even the "casual" ones--seem all but done with your farms and cities of yore.

What do you think of the numerous reports on the growing hardcore crowd in social games? How do you think this will change the industry in the long run? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

FarmVille Horse Paddock: Everything you need to know

Back in the middle of August, FarmVille saw the launch of the Wildlife Habitat breeding building, and at the time we were told that six (and then seven) new buildings would be released in all. We didn't know when those buildings would eventually release, but as time passed we've been led to here. The final animal breeding building has launched in FarmVille, the Horse Paddock.

Similar to the Cow Pasture, this Horse Paddock is specifically for Horses, and it gives you an opportunity to store those horses and randomly breed those that are inside. You'll only need to have a single "type" of each Horse for it to be possible to breed a matching Foal when harvesting the building, but as of right now, a few Horses or Unicorns may not be able to be stored. (This is probably because either they're coded differently, or Zynga just forgot.)

Of course, before you can actually use your Horse Paddock, you need to build it. You'll need three building materials, two of which are new: 10 each of Logs, Saddles and Bridles. These Logs are the same logs that are used to repair/upgrade the Lighthouse Cove on your new farm, so it will be up to you to decide when exactly to divert your efforts there into building this Horse Paddock. As for gathering these ingredients, you can do so by asking friends through individual gift requests, or you can purchase them outright for 1 Farm Cash each.

Once its construction is complete, you'll be given a free Cream Draft Horse. You can store up to 20 Horses in total inside your new building, and you can have as many Paddocks as you like, provided you collect the building materials to build each on individually. With this feature also comes the ability to grow individual Foals into adults with Farm Cash. You can keep them as babies forever (as before), but if you've received a free Foal from a friend and can't wait for the Nursery Barn to grow it into an adult, you can now pay to do so outright.

Remember, both Foal and Calf mastery are coming soon to the game, if you need any extra incentive to build one of these buildings--and fast! Also, with the release of the Horse Paddock, the Horse Stable is now unavailable to buy/build from the market. You can keep your existing Horse Stable(s), but you'll also be given the option to trade in all of your Horse Stables to receive exclusive Horses and Animal Feed. Then again, as so many users lost their Cows entirely when doing the same for the new Cow Pasture building, I'd suggest holding off on that for now ... or forever.

Check out the rest of our FarmVille Cheats & Tips right here.

What do you think of the Horse Paddock? Do you prefer it over the Horse Stable, even though it has less storage capacity? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille Horse Paddock Goals: Everything you need to know

With the launch of the Horse Paddock in FarmVille, many farmers are probably wondering just when the matching set of goals will arrive. If you're like most, you probably don't have them in your game yet, as they are on a very slow rollout. For those that do have them, however, you'll see that this set of six goals has a 16-day time limit (perhaps less by the time these roll around to everyone), and will reward you some Horses for completing them. Here's a guide for doing just that:

Horsing Around

    * Get 6 Horse Combs
    * Place 1 Horse Paddock
    * Buy 3 Orange Hay Bales

The Horse Combs are earned through a general news feed post. The full six people can click on this post to actually send you rewards, so you shouldn't have to ask for it twice. As for the Horse Paddock, note that this goal doesn't require you to have completed the construction on the building - just place its base. Finally, the Orange Hay Bales are available from the store for 125 coins each. Finishing this first goal, no matter how simple it might seem, actually gives you some great rewards: 50 XP, 2,500 coins and a Pink Saddled Horse. To be specific, the horse's body is white, but the saddle is pink.

There She Is, Miss Equestrian...

    * Get 6 Horse Tiaras
    * Buy 2 Horse Topiaries
    * Harvest 10 Horses

For this one, we're not sure if Horses placed inside your Horse Paddock (or previously owned Horse Stables will count), so if you try it once and they don't, just pull some Horses out of storage and wait for them to become ready to harvest on their own. To collect the Tiaras, you'll post another item to your news feed asking all friends to help at once. You can then finish this goal off by purchasing the Horse Topiaries, which cost just 100 coins each in the store. For completing this second goal, you're given 50 XP, 2,500 coins, a single Animal Feed and a Fancy Hitching Post decoration.

Sugar High

    * Get 6 Sugar Cubes
    * Complete a Horse Paddock
    * Harvest 100 Vegetables

It doesn't matter which vegetable crop you harvest, so long as you harvest 100 individual squares of them. While you wait for those crops to grow, you can collect the Sugar Cubes via a general news feed post, and can complete the Horse Paddock by collecting its 30 required building ingredients. Check out our guide to the Horse Paddock to see exactly what we mean. Finishing this goal gives you 50 XP, 2,500 coins and a Cream Stallion.

Horseplay

    * Get 9 Carrots on Sticks
    * Harvest a Horse Paddock
    * Harvest 75 Wheat

Each Horse Paddock is available to harvest once every 24 hours, so if you happen to collect from one right before you receive this goal, just wait until the next day to finish this one off. In the meantime, you can post a general news post asking for the Carrots on Sticks and can harvest the wheat as well. For finishing this goal, you'll receive 50 XP, 2,500 coins, five units of Animal Feed and a Blingy Water Trough decoration. Apparently, these horses are fairly high maintenance.

Giddy Up!

    * Get 9 Stylish Horse Shoes
    * Master Cream Stallion to Level 1
    * Harvest 50 Mint

The fastest way to master any Horse will be to make sure they're in storage, so that they can be collected from once per day (rather than once every few days when they're outside of buildings). Just place the Cream Stallion into either Horse building on your farm (that is, if you didn't trade in your Horse Stable for feed and prizes) and collect from it routinely to reach Level 1 before this goal series expires. Oh, and you guessed it--the Stylish Horse Shoes come from a general news post on your wall. Finish off this goal and you'll receive 50 XP, 2,500 coins, five units of Animal Feed and something for your avatar: a Jockey Outfit.

Saddle Up!

    * Get 9 Horse Saddles
    * Place 10 Horses in a Horse Paddock
    * Harvest 50 Spinach

If you already have 10 or more Horses in a Horse Paddock and this step doesn't automatically complete for you, just pull them back out and replace them in the building. That should clear up any "bugs." One final news feed post will help you earn the Horse Saddles, which you can collect while waiting for your Spinach to grow, which takes 14 hours. When finishing this goal, you will have completed the Horse Paddock goal series in its entirety, and will receive 50 XP, 2,500 coins and a Chestnut Mini Stallion (a dark brown miniature horse) as your final rewards.

Just remember--these goals are on a time limit, so if you like these prizes more than those, say, for completing the Chapter 2 Goals in the Lighthouse Cove farm, feel free to prioritize any way you'd like to receive the best prizes in your eyes. Happy farming!

Android gaming gets smurfalicious, Smurfs' Village launches Sept. 28

The Smurfs Village
Android owners, did you really think you could survive the blue wave for long? Capcom's Beeline Interactive announced that Smurfs' Village will launch on select Android devices for free on Sept. 28. Originally released for the iPhone and iPad in late 2010, the mobile social game skyrocketed in popularity and even resulted in one hilarious lesson in child rearing in 2011.

The game plays out much like mobile Zynga games like CityVille Hometown in that players are tasked (by Papa Smurf) to build up their very own--you guessed it--village. But this time, it's for the Smurfs to dwell in as the evil Gargamel seeks them out. During your time expanding the Smurfs' miniature empire, you'll gain access to some of the more popular Smurfs and their special abilities.

Namely, many of these blue buggers will unlock mini games for you to enjoy and find additional resources with like Greedy Smurf's Baking Game or Papa Smurf's Potion Mixing Game. Of course, players can also share their experiences with their friends on Facebook through Facebook Connect. According to Capcom, Smurfs' Village consistently ranks as a top grossing app worldwide. (We think we have an idea of how that happened back in the day.)

Most recently, Capcom and Beeline released Smurfs' Grabber to iPhone and iPad, which will soon integrate directly with Smurfs' Village. (Not to mention that Ubisoft released a full-blown Smurfs game for Facebook.) We imagine that, with the heaping gold mine that the Smurfs property has proven to be for Capcom, it won't be long before you're grabbing for goodies in Smurfs' Village with Smurfs' Grabber on Android devices, too. Until then, just focus on building your blue buddies some comfy mushroom houses.

Zynga publishes Mafia Wars 2 comic, sets the stage for Las Vegas intrigue

Mafia Wars 2 has remained a mystery since the word leaked in January. The only follow-up the public has gotten from Zynga is last week's 'badass' trailer. But the game's official fan page announced a Mafia Wars 2 digital comic last night, titled with the game's much bandied about tagline, "Being Bad Never Felt So Good". The comic presents the glamorous yet dangerous world of the game, which is set in Las Vegas, and drops just enough exposition for the reader to meet the cast -- including whose shoes players will be stepping into once the game launches.

This eight-page comic was created by UDON Entertainment, a Canadian comics studio that specializes in Asian-inspired art, lending the story a manga flair in the character designs and paneling layout. UDON (named after the Japanese noodle) isn't a new entrant in games comics either. They're best known for their work with major Japanese games maker Capcom, drawing and publishing comics and artbooks for the Street Fighter series.
Mafia Wars 2 characters
So far, Zynga seems intent on keeping quiet about Mafia Wars 2's gameplay (except for the fact that it'll be a "vast 3-D world"), but they've been very big on establishing the game's world and its characters, the latter of which actually have detailed backstories available on the official website. A focus on characters and narratives is a rare thing in Facebook games. The last time this was done, and to a much greater extent, was Qunify's CLASH: Rise of the Heroes, which is heavily based on superhero comics. One of Zynga's developers, Mike Humphrey, has said that "I'm really looking forward to finally seeing how Mafia Wars 2 is received; it's unlike most games on Facebook right now, and I think it pushes the envelope of what people can expect from games on the platform." Let's hope they keep pushing until the day of the launch.

To check out the comic yourself, click here and follow the directions to 'Like' the game's official Facebook fan page.

RockYou partner Peak Games raises $11.5M for social game projects

For those of you (like myself) who are kind of tired of seeing the western world dominate Facebook games, this news should come as breath of fresh air. VentureBeat reports that Istanbul-based company Peak Games has raised $11.5 million and purchased two companies in efforts to become a power player in Facebook games. The developers in question, Umaykut and Erlikhan, were bought in what Peak Games calls "talent acquisitions." Sound familiar?

This move speaks to the rapid growth of Facebook games in regions like Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa, Mexico and South America. As we already know, Peak Games will work with growing publisher RockYou to distribute and localize its games in those regions. At the moment, Peak Games is the 18th most popular developer on Facebook, according to AppData, beating out notables like CrowdStar and Digital Chocolate in daily players.

Its most popular internally-created game is Okey, a social puzzle board game. And if you count its fans across all social networks including Facebook, Peak Games welcome 4 million daily players and 16 million monthly players, according to VentureBeat. Peak Games has made a name for itself in localizing social games from national companies for its audience, which is the the fourth largest on Facebook.

"Our goal is to be the dominant provider of games for emerging markets," Peak Games CSO Rina Onur, told VentureBeat. "The growth has been huge in the last six months. These regions are growing super fast and they are very hungry for games."

Facebook gaming is huge in regions other than the U.S.--companies like DeNA and Gree in Japan, Tencent in China and wooga in Europe are testament to that. But what we're more interested in is seeing creators like Peak Games create successful games for a global audience. Perhaps an injection of cash (from Hummingbird Ventures, Earlybird Venture Capital and an anonymous strategic investor) and talent will make that happen--Peak Games has an office in San Francisco, after all.

Would you like to see more Facebook games from these regions? Do you think Peak Games has a good chance at climbing up the ladder? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

FarmVille Pic of the Day: Makiziki's lush desert oasis

Click the image to make it larger.
farmville english countryside lush grass
Howdy folks. Today's featured farm is a handsome design by Makiziki, a player who spends time over at the FarmVille Forums. Makiziki's farm caught my eye because it does something rather novel: paths. Paths may be common in other games such as CityVille, Empires & Allies, and FrontierVille, but in FarmVille, there is no easy way to make paths. All the dirt trails you see are actually created by hand placing the Lush Grass decoration all over the farm.

So not only is this farm a beautiful estate full of crops, animals, and items; but it also serves as a great design guide for other FarmVille artists. Using Lush Grass to cover a farmville tall grass makizikifarm hasn't been done too much, especially considering how nice it looks. Unfortunately, Lush Grass was a limited time English Countryside item that is no longer available. However, a different item, Tall Grass, can be bought in the decorations tab of the market for 1,500 coins apiece. The only difference is that Tall Grass is a little taller, so it will give farms a more wild, natural look.

In addition to the unique use of grass and desert background in order to make paths, the farm has a lot more going on. In an age where FarmVille players have absurd amounts of stuff, Makiziki's farm remains rather organized. Here's what they had to say about their farm:

    Well, first of all, I love to design with paths. FarmVille doesn't actually have them yet. And I love a lot of green, so my design looks like a real farm. I worked about 3-4 hours to finsih this farm, and I was so tired when I was done :) But I love my new farm :)

Entertainment Games looks to revive soap operas in Facebook games

FarmVille may have killed the daytime soap opera, but it seems like soaps might have their heyday after all. Langhorne, Penn.-based Entertainment Games announced that it hired Michael Fairman (pictured below), a leading expert on daytime soaps (bet you didn't know such a job existed, eh?) to help the company develop a soap opera game with Heyday Games.

Working toward this announcement, the company has been surprisingly busy. Entertainment Games bought social games maker Heyday Games in late June. Then in August, the company changed the name it's had since 1992. Two weeks ago, the company struck a licensing deal with intellectual rights management firm CMG Worldwide to use pictures of celebrities for some "retro-based social game for Facebook, Google+, mobile devices and the open web."

Aside from admittedly banking on nostalgia, there are a few clues as to what type of game the company looks to make. Entertainment Games wants to harness Fairman's two decades of experience in the industry. The company wants his help to create a game that Entertainment Games's CCO F.J. Lennon says will "deliver a ground-breaking social gaming experience that both the gaming and soap opera industries will take note of."

Michael Fairman soap opera expertSince Facebook games came along, games and daytime soaps had been inadvertently at war over the same audience, namely, 25 to 54-year-old women. Unfortunately for soaps fans, Zynga's "television audience destruction machine" won the battle over All My Children and One Life to Live. But Entertainment Games isn't the only company looking to capitalize on this obvious demographic.

In an effort to generate more revenue, UK soap opera Coronation Street was turned into a Facebook social game called "Corrie Nation". Unfortunately, the game didn't last a year before it was taken down for a complete rehaul, with ATV network looking for a new game developer to take on the job. With soap operas dying and the first (and only) Facebook soap opera game ever made, out of commission, you'd think that no one would bother with another attempt, right? Well, here comes Entertainment Games, Inc. to prove us wrong.

From the sound of things, soap operas can find new life after television as Facebook games. On top of that, they're going to return vying for the same demographic as they once did against Zynga, but this time, they'll be on the same playing field.

Do you think soap opera social games have a chance at being the next big hit? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment
